Phew! Today is quite the day, eh? It’s the most frightening day of the decade - Friday the 13th, in the blessed patron month of all things creepy, October.

On this special day, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross have gifted us with a re-working of John Carpenter’s iconic Halloween theme, more houses in my neighborhood are starting to slap up their decorations, and I have approximately 40 pounds of candy corn I somehow need to import into England by Monday. In the coming weeks, I’ll be putting together a proper Halloween-themed playlist in hopes to make the rest of your month spooktacular. To tide you over, here’s a link to a list I made in 2012 titled oooOooOOOOoo – it’s still rather good.

In the meantime, hang tight and make sure you have everything you need for your costume (because everyone should always dress up).

Pals in London reading this: cmd+f is coming to London! I would be grateful for any leads about exciting gigs happening in London between 16-28 October. If your band is playing, I’d love to come see/hear you and shoot your show, too. Give me a tweet, and maybe we can “have a cheeky one” (did I do that right?)

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. As you already know, I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too!

As always, you know the drill: if you like what you hear, spread the cheer. Tell your friends about the songs you liked in this letter, but most importantly, let the artists know. There’s a good chance they’ll see your comments. Let them know how good their tunes are, and they’ll crank out even more magic.

P.S. If you would like to have this letter sent to your email every Friday, please head over to this link right here to subscribe to never miss a weekly roundup!

“Body” - LÉON | Hands down one of my favorite artists to watch right now. I would have said this before Monday night, but it was definitely solidified by Tuesday morning. On Monday night, I witnessed this song with my own ears at the El Rey Theatre, and it was far bouncier and groovier compared to most of LÉON’s discography. While the Swedish singer knows how to lay it down thick and made you sniffle up buckets of snot with her gut wrenching ballads about regret and heartbreak, “Body” is a lighter introduction. Also: the pseudo-distorted harpsichord in the pre-chorus is top notch – gives it the barest Fleetwood Mac vibe. Listen here

“Are You Down” -  Oddnesse | The levels of this song are charming as heck: lyrically, it’s a straightforward song about asking someone if they’re down with hookin’ up with you, possibly more. What’s delicious are the instrumentals, as they literally drag along cautiously in bits, all the while sounding like a seductive candle flickering in the moonlight. The tone gets a bit bashful in the chorus as Rebeca Arango sings “Do you want go slow? / Are you feeling heavy? / Would you ever get high? / Would you ever make out?” and ultimately, “Do you think it’s possible? / Are you down?” The closer swirls out on a confident, hypnotic flare, and by the end of it I too am drunk at the thought of being down for anything. What a fucking brilliant, intoxicating track. I’m OBSESSED. Listen here

“I’ll Be There” -  King Henry feat. Sasha Sloan | This song immediately got dumped into my Halsey Imposters playlist, then proceeded to get stuck in my head all week. Spotify is really pushing this King Henry bop as I’ve heard the song crop up in at least three separate Pop playlists I skimmed through at work this week. As for King Henry’s credentials, he’s worked under Diplo for the past few years, making tracks for artists like Beyonce, Justin Bieber, and most notably Major Lazer’s “Cold Water.” Meanwhile Sasha Sloan, aka our buttered down Halsey-lite vocalist, is a rising songwriter who helped write Louis Tomlinson’s debut solo single “Just Hold On” with Steve Aoki. “I’ll Be There” is an earworm buffed with the smoothest production. Love the subtle UK Garage energy flowing through the track. Listen here

“Boomerang” -  Why Don’t We | Now that all members of 1D have released their own solo efforts and we approach nearly two years since 1D’s last performance together, new boy bands are starting to crop up. With the rise of popularity in K-Pop outside of East Asia, purely pop-driven Western boy bands are giving it a shot. Luckily for them, TRL is back on MTV (without Carson Daly, so, like???? The point, y’all??). Anyway, I’d heard there are about four boy new American boy bands on the market, and it appears Why Don’t We are the first to pique my interest. To be blunt, the reason I enjoy “Boomerang” so much is it high key sounds like a Majid Jordan track, although I feel Majid Jordan would flourish it a bit more and chop up the song to not be as repetitive. It falls just under 3 minutes, meaning I had it on repeat for seven hours straight this week to really get a feel for it. I sent some of their tracks to some friends this week, and while some enjoyed it and others found it a bit too “Early Bieber,” I think I hear the beginnings of a group who could push some boundaries. Listen here

“I’ll Never Want a BF” -  Bec Sandridge | Werq @ artists smashing heteronormativity one song at a time! This one goes out to all my single ladies and gents who are okay with being single – and of course, a shout out to lesbians who definitely will not want a boyfriend. OUT magazine notes it as a “relatable anthem rejecting social pressures to be in relationships altogether,” which, finally??? That aside, Australia is currently having a massive public vote to decide if the country should acknowledge same sex marriages (Bec's an Australian artist!). The video for “I’ll Never Want a BF” features two women shamelessly kissing each other despite being surveillanced. The tune has a very campy 80s vibe - Bec could easily be described as a silver-haired Siouxsie Sioux. Listen here

  • The family of the late Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park who died by suicide this summer, have gifted us with an episode of Apple Music’s “Carpool Karaoke” that was recorded 6 days before his death. • What a time to be alive: one week after Liam Gallagher dropped his debut solo album, Noel’s gone and dropped a new song. The brothers are back to publicly feuding each other, and like that, suddenly we’re reminded who really was the sound and soul of Oasis. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ “Holy Mountain” is a jam Listen here

A lot has happened in the past week: the best month of the year started on Sunday, I called out sick for the first time ever for the sole purpose of resting my body and not ditching work for a press event or Disneyland, decompressed binge-watching all five seasons of Merlin, booked flights to London for the entire second half of October, and landed & accepted an offer for the start of my dream career. To boot, Blade Runner 2049 opens tonight and my friend got tickets to see Coldplay at the Rose Bowl tonight, so I can officially report back to you about experiencing Tove Lo perform “Disco Tits” live.

Pals in London reading this: my schedule’s open for taking my Chevrolegs around to as many art galleries and museums I can fit in during my stay. I would be grateful for leads on any exciting gigs happening in London between 16-28 October. Give me a tweet, and allow me to buy you a drink for your troubles.

Between all that excitement, can you believe I have managed to dig up five exciting artists this week? Brace yourself – they’ll blow your socks off.

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. As you already know, I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too!

“Last Time We Danced” - BETSY | Though I included BETSY’s entire debut album as a recommendation in the Bonus section in last week’s letter, I felt compelled to include a track in the letter this today. Sounding like the second coming of Cher aside, “Last Time We Danced” is a bizarre, enchanting burst of feel-goodness basking in the memory of the most perfect moment. Those moments are little beacons to hold onto and keep you going, aren’t they? Perfectly fitting as we eclipse into a new season and the final quarter of the year, yeah? Listen here

“Hands Up Head Down” -  Sure Sure | Abso-fucking-lutely put down everything you’re doing right this moment and LISTEN TO THIS TUNE. Listen to this on full volume, quietly with the window open, with noise-canceling headphones, with the shower rumbling in the background – and each experience will uncover a new delectable sonic layer. “Hands Up Head Down” rocks to its own beat, swirled with fuzzy guitars, tinny drums, and snappy melodies. Oh, and it’s got its own dance move: “put your hands up, keep your head down, and then bob to the beat like a zombie.” Happy freakin’ October, y’all. Listen here

“Bubblegum” -  YONAKA | Some may say rock has lost its raw spirit, but I say those who say that are likely just boring dudes only listening to other boring dudes singing dull rock music. YONAKA are the wave. Fronted with theeeee realest female vocalist, the group teeter the line of piercing through the rock-mosphere with a pop sensibility. Their sound is hungry, ambitious, and raw AF. All that is best showcased on their new track “Bubblegum.” How fitting their debut EP is titled HEAVY. Listen here

“Pinball” -  Luwten | Dutch outfit Luwten’s debut album is dropping next Friday, and I cannot wait for it to become my new spooky non-Halloween-but-absolutely-fitting-for-October album to go alongside Agnes Obel’s Aventine and iamamiwhoami’s kin records. “Pinball” is a chilling, achey, heartbreaking echo of a love that’s not quite right. Listen here

“Míol Mór Mara” -  Outsider |  I think I’ve stumbled across the Irish Bruce Springsteen??? “Míol Mór Mara” is a blissful indie pop joint that I cannot take off repeat. Listen here

BONUS

  • Last known living rockstar on planet earth Liam Gallagher has released his debut solo album As You Were. Should he ever read this letter, he’d most definitely make a comment about how nobody actually listens to “music” anymore, and streaming’s ruined everything. That aside, it’s a fuckin’ great rock record Stream here

  • As I linked/alluded in the intro, Tove Lo has a new music video for her single “Disco Tits.” It’s NSFW, and wild as hell. How wild? Includes number clips of a Jim Henson-esque puppet giving head to Tove Lo in a top-down convertible and in a seedy roadside motel room. Ch’yeah, buddy. Watch here

  • Kelela has DELIVERT! Her new album Take Me Apart is finally out! Listen here

  • Need more sultry, sexy R&B tunes, spin Sabrina Claudio’s debut album About Time. Standout track: “Used To” Listen here

  • Someone collect Craig David, please Listen here

  • Feeling soft? An entire Blue Hawaii album titled Tenderness is here to swaddle you Listen here

  • cmd+f favorites ROMES have finally dropped their self-titled debut album. Congrats, gents Listen here

Going to keep the opening notes very short and sweet this week, as so much has happened (personally, globally, etc) - but before anything else, I reckon if you haven’t already, though you most likely have (if you haven’t, you must be just logging onto the internet for the first time today, I suppose), but J Balvin has released a remix of his global smash (in Latin countries. Trust me, the song is massive as f*ck, and you’re going to have to believe me if you’re not from a Latin country) hit “Mi Gente” with none other than MFing BEYONCE. J Balvin’s impact - he’s got Bey signing in Spanish, too! Naturally, the internet lost its mind over it.

100% of proceeds made from the release of this remix will go toward helping victims from the recent natural disasters in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Get on streaming the tune here, and maybe consider purchasing the track off iTunes/your preferred digital music retailer if you dig. It's for a good cause 'n all that.

Now, onto five fantastic tracks I want to share with y’all this week.

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. As you already know, I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too!

“Tommy” - Tommy Genesis | Those who follow the underground rap scene likely are already familiar with Vancouver emcee Tommy Genesis. Hailed as the “most rebellious underground rap queen,” her new joint “Tommy” is a sinister, biting track. The beat is dope, definitely borderline unnerving in an-axe-murderer-is-lurking-behind-your-shower-curtain kind of way. Warning: highly addictive. Listen here

“Big One” -  Madeline Kenney | Music to listen to when you’re freaking the hell out because every single element of your life has lead up to this moment of time and everything feels more wholesome and real and worthwhile than it ever did leading up to that moment in time. “Big One” is a lyrically grand tune, each cry out a beam of excitement about figuring out your life and discovering you’ve found the one person you want to share the rest of your life with. Madeline’s entire album Night Night at the First Landing also has this cozy, dreamworld vibe if you’re looking to channel this mood over the weekend. Listen here

“Angel Fire” -  Hollie Cook | I know most of us are prepared to launch into super-goth mode and burrow under nine layers of blankets then sink into the mattress over a cup of steaming hot cocoa listening to Transatlantacism on repeat, right? Well, for those who AREN’T seeking that our/live in the SOUTHERN hemisphere (yeah, guys - they’re about to plow through Springtime down there), I present to you the groovy, island vibey “Angel Fire.” Hollie’s voice is as smooth as whipped buttercream. Listen here

“Needing U” -  Desta French | That Tribe “Electric Relaxation” sample is fine as hell. Desta French’s got the chops with this old school mid-90s R&B pop job, I can’t wait to hear more from Desta. Listen here

“Why Didn’t You Say That?” -  The Lemon Twigs |  The Lemon Twigs are truly from another time. Their entire vibe is plucked straight out of that kooky, 60s Baroque rock. It’s hokey, but it works, and it sonically sounds like a day kissed by the California sun. Listen here

BONUS

  • Harry Styles, covering a song about a girl wanting to be a girlfriend of a boy they have a crush on so they can be close to the boy. [cue rainbow flag] Listen to Harry Styles cover “Girl Crush” here

  • Legends stacked on legends stacked on legends! Listen to what we go at stake: Little Dragon feat. Faith Evans “Peace Of Mind” produced by Raphael Saadiq. Raphael Saadiq!! Listen here

  • For my shoegaze babes, go listen to Wolf Alice’s new album Vision of a Life. Personal favorite is the CAN-inspired minimal bass “Formidable Cool.” Listen here

  • New Four Tet album New Energy Listen here AND new Miley Cyrus album Younger Now Listen here

  • Former cmd+f mentionable BETSY has finally released her self-titled debut album! Hurray! Listen here

  • If you’re doing for a bit of a laugh, please check out Lizzo’s new track and video for “Truth Hurts” Watch here

  • So, Spotify thinks they can guestimate what music you listened to during formative teenage years based off their nifty algorithm. Granted my list neglected to include music from my later high school years, it was on the nose with its selections for tunes I listened to primarily from my days of middle school and early high school. Selections included primarily early pop punk and emo tunes, with a big of gangster rap peppered in between all of those bits. Click here if you’d like to peep my own Time Capsule playlist. The energy of last month’s solar eclipse has come down like the morning after being at Warped Tour - just an amalgamation of intensely surprising, surreal events cropped up one after the other. I’ll let this out of the way first: Harry Styles and MUNA lived up to my expectations at the Greek Theatre on Wednesday night. What an experience.

Now, for the fact that I use this letter as a bit like a weekly diary entry, it’d be silly of me to not mention this happening Monday night, and it showed no signs of slowing down thru Wednesday afternoon. Was a bit surreal linking my mother to a Teen Vogue article and having to explain how Twitter works. Also, it’d be too soon if I ever see another Malfoy joke.

As you might have noticed, this week’s been a doozy going onto Twitter. Please excuse me if I haven’t replied to some of your tweets sent my way; I’ve had my mentions restricted greatly… because, well, duh. How can you feasibly sort through 50k+ notifications?!

In this economy, you’ve gotta strike while the iron’s hot. This is the first time I’ve been awarded the opportunity to be an opportunist, so I seized it, and now dear readers, we have a whole new extension to the cmd+f family. Hello to the new subscribers, and thanks for finding cmd+f!

It’s time to roll up your sleeves and get ready to dig into new music.

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week [note: my notifications are just now starting to peeter out… so…. I’ll see ya on the flip side]. As you already know, I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too!

“Not Done” - Bloody Knees | Honestly, it’s been ages since I’ve heard a grungy tune and fell in love with it. Blood Knees reignite the spirit of early 90s rock that swamped out of the Pacific Northwest (with the most notable comparison being, you guessed it, Nirvana) - but also a tad of the heavy bits of early 90s shoegaze. Whilst “Not Done” is riddled with wavering, grainy guitars, it’s got an invigorating, melodic chorus you cannot help headbanging away to and screaming out the lyrics. I stumbled across this tune listening to Dork magazine’s new radio stream and could only find a music video for the tune online. Head over to YouTube to watch and keep your eyes out for Bloody Knees’ new EP dropping next month. Watch here

“Long Time Coming” -  TOMI | What a breath of fresh air. “Long Time Coming” is a song that builds on layers of itself, twisting and slapping on more reverb, harmonies, and bits of instrumentals that ultimately explode in the final chorus and fizzle out as quickly as it built up. If you dig this, check out the rest of TOMI’s new Used To EP. Listen here

“Versus Game” -  Blue Hawaii | From the first note of “Versus Game,” I had the wind knocked out of me. I immediately scrambled to send the song to my pal Agnes to see if it wasn’t weird to be having such a visceral reaction to a song, and it turns out it was completely warranted. Fused with pop sensibilities of low key late 90s trip hop (re: Olive’s “You’re Not Alone”) and dreamy vocals by Raphaelle Standell-Preston of the hazy art rock band BRAIDS, “Versus Game” is an mellow, seductive sugar high. I’d give anything to find a way to live in this song. Listen here

“French Becky” -  Grace Mitchell | For a solid month I held Grace’s single “Capital Letters” in my secret cmd+f arsenal, but never shared it - but here’s “French Becky,” an upbeat, brazen, hilarious tune about those pesky butterflies fluttering around your stomach over a TOTAL LOSER. I honestly snorted the first time I looked up the lyrics. If you’re in Los Angeles, you can check out Grace opening for MUNA (who opened for Harry freakin’ Styles at the Greek Theatre!) next month at the Fonda. Listen here

“Play God” -  Sam Fender |  Whilst Sam’s new single he dropped today, “Millennial,” is the sonic equivalent of scrolling through an endless Instagram feed of photos of avocado toast – a massive “fuck you” to the media portraying hard working youths as “young and dumb” lazy free loaders – I have to step back and introduce you “Play God.” It’s a sexy, soulful tune about a heavily surveillanced society. Nothing like swaying your hips to a little Foucault theory, innit? Listen here

BONUS

  • New The Killers album Wonderful Wonderful is inspiring as hell. Personal fav off this one is “Out Of My Mind” Listen here

  • In the mood for a bit of New Order-esque vibes? Australian’s finest neo-disco indie rockers Cut Copy have released their new album Haiku From Zero – and that should tide you over. Listen here

  • I’d like to thank the universe for delivering an entire new The Horrors album today, too Listen here

  • Good ol’ Morrissey is back making bops for depressed queers. His comeback single “Spent the Day in Bed” discusses the harms of over consuming news and to remember to take care of your damn self. High key relatable. Cheers, Moz Listen here

  • My bellowing cherub George Ezra’s gone and done another BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. Mans too good, y’all. He performed his new single “Don’t Matter Now,” but also covered Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy” to keep with the whole ‘you’re gonna love life a lot more if you just chill the eff out’ vibe Watch here

  • Calling all emos: CIRCA SURVIVE HAVE AN ENTIRE ALBUM OUT TODAY - and I had no idea until I was putting this letter together. I’ve been listening to the CS/Anthony Green catalogue a lot the past month, so maybe the universe was inadvertently reminding me to not forget about them. Listen here

  • Fergie is really and truly back, y’all - Double Duchess is out (and includes singles she dropped in 2015 and 2016??? How long y’all be sitting on this album?) Listen here

The coming week is going to be exciting for me. After many moons, the day has nearly arrived in which I will be seeing a concert lineup of my fever dreams: MUNA and Harry Styles live at the Greek Theater. Somebody pinch me, please! I’ve been working very hard at day-job stuff so I’ve been neglecting actual live concert coverage for the past month, so I’m very much looking forward to this one, so much so I’ve requested the day after the show off from my day job. It’s serious.

We’ve already got fourth quarter heating up - artists are coming forward with album release announcements and new singles. Considering 2017 has been the wildest year of Madlibs and nostalgia comeback tours, who do you think is going to come out of left field with a new album? After seeing that Cher and Future GAP ad, oh what I’d give for another Cher single.

Anyhow, I’ve harvested five sweet tracks for you to enjoy throughout your week.

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. As you already know, I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too!

“Where’s the Bass Amp?” - Superfood | When you say “a-boom chicka boom,” and you chk chk boom to boom biddy bumbombrrapp skeetybeep pap pap - well, you get the gist. This little earworm is the opening track from Superfood’s new album Bambino. I’ve tested this extensively throughout the past week with the general public (re: my co workers) by playing it aloud (at my desk during work hours), and 100% of my subjects responded with a hip sway, a hop-skip-jump jump, or even a verbal response of delight. With findings like that, “Where’s the Bass Amp?” allows for guaranteed satisfaction. Listen here

“Victoria Falls” -  Flyte | Phew! I’ve been gabbing on and on to a handful of friends this week about Flyte. I stumbled across their sonically light-hearted Beatles-esque tune “Cathy Come Home” (which is lyrically about a loved one begging Cathy to get out of an abusive relationship), and in turn dove head first into Flyte’s debut album The Loved Ones. While definitely soaked in 60s/70s rock vibes, their sound varies across a massive span of influences. With a guitar solo slick enough to make Blue Oyster Cult proud, “Victoria Falls” shines bright with a breadth of lush harmonies woven throughout the tune. Truly my most warming find I’ve stumbled upon this week. Listen here

“Soft power” -  Ayla | Holy moly… Ayla is onto something. I was unsure about “Soft power” when it first started playing, but as the song builds on itself, it beefs up with a handful of plot twists - from the instrumental chorus, the politically charged lyrics. It took me ages to dig up info on Ayla herself, and I finally found a single blog post about her on a Swedish entertainment blog. Through the power of Google Translate, it turns out Ayla is yet another Swedish genius. If you enjoy unconventional pop (re: Grimes, Charli XCX, Lykke Li, etc.), “Soft power” is right up your alley. Listen here

“Lifted Away” -  Joseph | Once again, shout out to my pal Agnes for throwing this gem down in front of me yesterday. Before I dip into the song itself, I feel very obligated to know my friend Brittany is likely reading this with her fist pumping in the air with delight knowing she’s heard of a music artist from this list before reading the letter. Joseph are her GIRLS, her Oregonian kin. While Joseph already have a strong following, I’ve plucked “Lifted Away” to share as it sounds completely different to their usual “White Winter Hymnal” / Power ‘Muricana sound. “Lifted Away” has a fate fit for a major motion picture trailer/soundtrack, potential for bubbling under the radar on local rock radio, and hell, even a nice life on all of the playlists you’re throwing together to slog your way through the next few months. Listen here

“Flags” -  Shoffy feat. Yuna | A year ago, I watched this guy perform on the pool deck of the rooftop bar at the Mondrian on Sunset in West Hollywood. It was a private event for press and label execs, and he really impressed me. I lost touch with his manager to set up an interview in the future about his forthcoming projects (so if you’re reading this right now...hit me up), and now he’s got a full on album. That night I learnt Shoffy (named Alex) is (or now likely WAS) a suit-and-tie professional by day working in finance who comes home to write sexy R&B jams at night. He’s had some explosive success on streaming services over the years, racking up literal MILLIONS (one has over 40 million!!) of streams on his tunes (seriously, his songs have cropped up in every major pop curated playlist I’ve stumbled upon since 2015). Now his new single and opening track from his debut self-titled LP ”Flags” features Malaysian pop goddess Yuna. Despite all the online success with his songs, Shoffy’s career is only starting to simmer. “Flags” is the ultimate soft bop. Listen here

BONUS

  • MUNA, one of my absolute favorite bands and Album of the Year contenders, are about to kick off their tour opening for Harry Styles next week and have finally released a studio recording of their tune “In My Way” Listen here

  • Your favorite Norwegian more-punk-than-pop band Sløtface have dropped their debut album Try Not to Freak Out. While half the album’s already been released via singles/previous EPs, it’s a delight to imagine it as an entire LP filled with songs for an imaginary teen movie soundtrack. Listen here

  • Queen of Behind the Scenes Footage Cut Music Videos Carly Rae Jepsen has shared a really cute video cut with behind the scenes footage leading up to actual choreographed music video footage for her splash summer single “Cut to the Feeling.” It’s directed by Gia Coppola, because why not??? Watch here

  • LORDE FEAT. KHALID, SZA (er, and Post Malone) - HOMEMADE DYNAMITE REMIX Listen here

  • BURIAL - “RODENT” Listen here

  • It was the late Amy Winehouse’s birthday yesterday. Dua Lipa and Gallant paid a touching tribute with an absolutely incredible cover of Amy’s “Tears Dry On Their Own” Watch here

  • Niall Horan has announced his debut album Flicker will be released (a week before my birthday!) on October 20, and has gifted us with a world of pain with his new single “Too Much To Ask.” With the lyric “my shadow’s dancing without you for the first time,” I got three words for young Niall: WHO HURT YOU???? Listen here

  • Following up about Nadine Coyle’s new single “Go to Work,” and it’s available on streaming services in the States now. I’m not saying this little gay club BOP has helped me get through 15 hours of overtime in the past week, but then again, you’ll never really know Listen here

Very grateful to be writing this letter at the moment rather than waiting in a virtual queue on Sephora.com preparing to max out my credit card in an attempt to swipe up a few pieces of the new Fenty Beauty collection. With October only weeks away, I have 7 family birthdays and Christmas Time to consider. “Treat yoself” is not an option unless it’s a dry gin martini with two onions and an olive with Tom Hardy’s butt in full view on my TV on a Tuesday night (and yes, I speak of this as if I've lived it because I have and you should join me sometime).

Well then.

Got six tracks by emerging artists that you likely let slip under your radar. If you have heard of these artists/songs, please give me a bell – you and I should talk. It could be the start of something great.

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too.

As always, you know the drill: if you like what you hear, spread the cheer. Tell your friends about the songs you liked in this letter, but most importantly, let the artists know. There’s a good chance they’ll see your comments. Let them know how good their tunes are, and they’ll crank out even more magic.

“Satan, Luella & I” - HMLTD | Let’s start this week’s letter with a MOOD. HMLTD’s entire essence is a mood. It’s dark, theatrical, flamboyant, and fun. Aesthetically, they look very much straight out of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and musically parallel Adam and the Ants (who somewhat also aesthetically looked fresh out of Rocky Horror Picture Show… in a way). HMLTD’s latest single “Satan, Luella & I” is a rollercoaster ride, marked with piano stabs, boisterous horns, and a healthy dash of vibrato. It’s a lot coming at you, and the radio edit cuts off about 2 minutes gets right to the point. You’ll be singing along in no time. Listen here (radio version is here)

“You and I” -  Maika Loubté | It is an absolutely crime I’ve only just stumbled across this song. Taken from Maika’s Le Zip EP that dropped in August 2016, I found myself spinning “You and I” a disgusting amount this week. While her tune “Le Gong” is also fantastic, I wanted to introduce you to Maika’s catalogue with this gem. It builds on itself so delicately and unfolds rather beautifully. Listen here

“Say It to My Face” -  Maty Noyes | Maty’s had her share of success being a featured vocalist on a Kygo track a couple years ago, which, good on her, and her last EP racked up quite a bit of spins on streaming services, but “Say It to My Face,” a full blow pop bop, is something to write home about. Please come mutually scream with me about how good this song is. Listen here

“Drink Too Much” -  Geowulf | A truly successful sad girl anthem utilizes painfully honest, sing-songy lyrics (such as “I get myself in trouble when I drink too much”) over lo-fi twee instrumentals. Geowulf have nailed that on the head here. Listen here

“Hotspice” -  Paper Son & Halima | Big up my girl Agnes for pointing out our Discover Weekly playlists are finally starting to sync. I actually stumbled this across her own personal playlist for September 2017 and fell in head first –then I noticed it showed up in my Discover Weekly playlist, too! “Hotspice” is a delightful mish-mash of Caribbean drums, dancehall, and upbeat electronic delights. Definitely a summer fresh jam that’s guaranteed to spark a bit of sunshine into your day. Listen here

“Live Like Animals” -  Nothing But Thieves | Cannot tell you how many times my friend Chris has told me about Nothing But Thieves, and finally this week I caught wind of the release of their new album Broken Machine after hearing a few previewed tracks on Radio 1. “Live Like Animals” is INSANE!! The guitars go berserk, the drums skitter along, the vocals are all over the place. Listen here

BONUS

  • An artist from the very first issue of cmd+f has dropped their debut album today! Three cheers to Anna of the North - give their new album Lovers a few spins and then tell them how much you love it. It’s absolutely magical. Listen here

  • “No Limit” - G-Eazy, A$AP Rocky and Cardi B. You heard: Rocky and Cardi on the same TRACK. Fuegooooo Listen here

  • If you told me a year ago that one of my favorite pop songs of 2017 would have the lyric “nipples are hard,” I wouldn’t have believed you. Considering the state of the world, it’s no surprise that Tove Lo has done the damn thing and unleashed her new single “Disco Tits” unto the world, and it’s a Grade A banger. Obvs NSFW, FYI. Listen here

  • 11/10 would want to live inside this new Mount Kimbie album, Love What Survives Listen here

  • If you’re looking for something a bit more intense, intentional, industrial, and high key powerful, I advise you listen to Zola Jesus’ new album Okovi. It spares no limits on theatrics. Production is astounding. Listen here

  • Sam Smith is back and I am SCALPT. I wasn’t expecting much out of “Too Good at Goodbyes” after the most boring Bond song of all time won a freakin’ Oscar…. But this is very much in his lane, it’s catchy, but these lyrics are SCALDING. Way to come back with a “f*ck you, I’m good” anthem, Sammy Boy. Listen here (and watch the little video he did for Spotify on your mobile if you have a moment here)

  • NEW SZA AND JORJA SMITH ON HBO’S INSECURE SEASON 2 OST!!!!!! Listen here

  • New York’s rising Afro-Puertorican hip-hop star Princess Nokia has finally dropped her highly anticipated album 1992 Deluxe. Twisted with some classic New York hip-hop flavor, album is DOPE. Listen here

  • Nadine Coyle, the only member left of Girls Aloud (who never signed the contract to formalize her split from the group), has released a new single titled “Go To Work” but it’s only available on iTunes and Apple Music… not in the States. Glad she’s back, but can I at least get some label clearance/distribution deals for me to have a reunion with Nadine here? Not asking for much. If I can’t have this, then I’d like to formally request for Nadine to move back to California and reopen her pub because that was the best pint of Guinness I’ve ever had outside of Ireland.

Wahoo! We’ve made it to another month this year. Today marks my second favorite month of the year, Pre-tober, as it is the month before October, and I spend all of it making numerous trips to World Market collecting Halloween party supplies, checking out creepy audiobooks from the library to listen to at my desk, and willing the weather to cool down enough for me to shake out my heavy knits from storage. Pumpkin spice flavor/scented EVERYTHING rolls up in Pre-tober, too, and that just makes waking up every morning a teeny bit more rewarding, doesn’t it? Whilst i know the only reason leaves are falling from trees is because the trees are so thirsty for water, they can’t sustain them, I still like to pretend they’re trying to tell us autumn is around the corner and not happening as late as November here in Los Angeles.

In the the letter this week, it brings me great pleasure to introduce five truly fantastic songs. Each artist noted below is wildly unique, and I’m so excited for you to hear them (if you haven’t already)!

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too.

“Chocolate” - Shy FX feat. Breakage, Ghetts, and Roses Gabor | BRUUUUUUUUH. This beat is insane. It’s dirty, thick, and smooth as hell all at once. What a fusion of textures wrapped up in this sweet little diddy - from Roses Gabor’s silky verses and a chock full of witty bars by the one and only Grime god Ghetts, “Chocolate” is quite the treat. Listen here

“You’ve Got The Heat” -  Luster | Throwback to the summer of ‘81: I wasn’t born yet, but the spirit of Luster’s sun-drenched tune “You’ve For The Heat” was definitely a-brewing. With an insatiable hook comparable to Tommy Tutone’s evergreen hit “867-5309 (Jenny),” “You’ve Got The Heat” could easily be slipped onto a bootleg copy of the Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack and we’d be none the wiser. It’s a vivacious, upbeat summery tune I’ve been sitting on for the past few weeks. Still fresh as ever with each spin. Listen here

“SGL” - Now, Now | My first memory of Now, Now was in a dingy little venue located under an overpass in Seattle. They were still called Now, Now Every Children, and were opening for Hellogoodbye. Today, they’ve dropped the Every Children, and picked up a few more hooks & pop cues along the way. As their first release in three years, the duo have primed their return to music with a potential sleeper hit. Expect to hear “SGL” (short for “shotgun lover”) on some future shopping trips at the mall and scattered across various playlists over the coming months. Can’t deny we’re all sleeping on a low key bop. Listen here and watch the music video here

“Sophomore” -  Honey Lung | My heart is always craving more gut churning reverb, and thank goodness I’ve stumbled across Honey Lung recently. The London group’s only track I can see listed on Spotify here in the States is a dreamy, head banging, soul ripper that’s soaked in 90s rock nostalgia. While some shoegaze can turn a little sleepy, Honey Lung’s guitar work gets tighter and more impressive as the song crests upward, gains speed, and keeps your ears guessing even as the instrumentals peter out toward the end. Listen here

Love in Bad Company” -  Gotts Street Park feat. Dielle | Last but certainly not least, “Love in Bad Company” is going to put you into a puddle of feelings. Produced by the UK collective Gotts Street Park, the group landed vocals by Leeds-based vocalist Dielle after hearing her perform at an open-mic night. Her soulful, velvety tones folded over the smooth jazz instrumentals is divine. You can hear the heartache bursting at the seams, and frankly, this is one of the most beautiful tunes I’ve heard to come out of 2017. If you're looking for a mood-de-booster to enhance your own Pre-tober moods, look no further. Listen here

BONUS

  • Before everything else, stop what you are doing and watch the music video for Jessie Ware’s new single “Selfish Love.” I want to live in this twisted, seductive, Italian art house MASTERPIECE. Watch here

  • Young chap Ten Tonnes has shared a new single, “Cracks Between.” Spiked with one last dose of energy as we fizzle away from eternal summertime sunshine. Listen here

  • Calling all dance music fans: the new Hercules & Love Affair album is here!!! Whilst this time they’ve deviated more away from a classic disco vibe, the spirit of being bathed in glitter lives on. Listen here

  • Like 7 years ago, LCD Soundsystem made a big to-do about disbanding and never ever making music together or performing live ever again. I remember watching a livestream of their final show in New York, and sobbed into a Big Gulp filled with rum and Coke during the closing notes of “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down.” Last summer, LCD Soundsystem rebanded (hell yes, in this economy!), I saw them perform at FYF Fest, and today they have a new album - american dream. As they say, your whole life trajectory can and likely will be completely different in 6 months time… and here we are. Listen here

  • Skott’s newest single “Remain” has got me deep in my Pre-tober mood. Listen here

  • Charlie Puth, the mastermind behind “Attention,” one of the most undeniable pop gems to drop this year, had reformulated this into a multi-format hit with a new remix featuring rapper Kyle. TBH, does Kyle add much more life to this song? If it’ll help it rise up the charts…. Listen here

  • You are what you stream: send me your personalized Spotify.me playlists after heading over to the site and checking out some cool data on your music streaming habits. According to my statistics, “Xtal” by Aphex Twin is my most streamed song in my library, 59% of the songs I listen to are energetic, and I stream like I’m god damn Ina Garten (aka a cooking enthusiast). At the end of the fun little stats round up, they generate a playlist customized with artists you may and may not be familiar with. Here is mine: Listen here

Back to reality - summer is over for most of y’all. Classes are starting to shuffle back in session, the sun is starting to set a little earlier (if you squint… you can totally tell), and my 6 day sabbatical away from my work and a computer has come to an end. Escaping to Portland for a few days did the trick (re: helped me freakin' RELAX).  While I’m up to my ears trying to catch up on my tasks at work, I can’t help but daydream about the next time we’ll get to experience rain and I can appropriately crawl back into a chunky knit sweater. Who’s with me?

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too.

“It Changes” -  Amber Arcades | I want to curl up to Amber Arcades’ latest EP Cannonball. Every single track on it sounds like a lazy day at the beach with the sun kissing at the tip of your nose - although “It Changes” in particular toes the line with an off-kilter edge. I dug around the net to find out a bit more about Amber Arcades and discovered she’s a Dutch war crimes expert named Annelotte who scrounged up her savings to fund her first album. Her tunes sound a bit like a hi-fi recording of Broadcast (RIP Trish) meets Warpaint. Listen here

“Only In A Dream” - Doug Tuttle | As I stated in the opening notes: I am so desperate for summer to be over, y’all! I sound like a brat, but the sunshine and need for aircon will not quit! “Only In A Dream” sounds precisely like the last sips of summer - like nursing a scraped knee with your skateboard beside you as you’re say on a hilltop watching the sunset. Listen here

Submersible” -  Sivu | Speaking of wanting summer to be OVER: last week, Brand New’s Science Fiction put me in a MOOD. I’ve been starving for autumn after walking through the suburbs of Portland wearing a denim jacket as soon as the temperatures dipped below 60F after sunset. Sivu’s haunting opening track “Submersible” off his latest LP Sweet Sweet Silent is a theatrical, languid, and deeply personal tune that will lull you into a crisp, cloudy October morning. Listen here

“On My Mind” -  Jorja Smith x Preditah | I don’t usually take a liking to UK Garage (with the exception of the king Craig David), but Jorja Smith can sell absolutely anything. While I don’t think “On My Mind” will be the crossover hit to make Jorja’s mark Stateside, it truly is a BOP. Get ready to bounce. Listen here

“Lost in the Mystery” - Shock Machine | One of my favorite bands in high school was Klaxons. I rinsed a dodgy rip of Myths of the Near Future for months before I was able to snag an import copy at a record shop. Ten years later, Klaxons are no more, but James Righton is (thankfully) still putting out new music. His latest project is Shock Machine, a sound forged in colorful psychedelic rock with a twist of bubbly 1960s pop riffs. The debut Shock Machine album came out today, and I present to you the fizzy, sweet “Lost in the Mystery” in hopes it’ll inspire you to give the full album a spin. Listen here

BONUS

  • If there is one album you consciously listen to this week, please make time for The War On Drugs’ A Deeper Understanding - absolute masterpiece Listen here

  • LOL

  • Katy Perry has a video out for “Swish Swish” - a clear call to Pop Art, the visuals are a desperate display of modern meme-itry (whoa @ my literary agency) and a time capsule of contemporary internet culture. Song still BANGS Watch here

  • Fergie still got it! Girl dropped two singles tonight - “You Already Know” feat. Nicki Minaj and “Hungry” feat. Rick Ross. The beat on “Hungry” is dope - it’s actually got me looking forward to her forthcoming album Double Dutchess. Go AWF, Gothtrap Stacy!!

  • Fifth Harmony have dropped their first album sans-Camila…. Album is smooth as hell. Highlight for me is “Sauced Up.” These girls did the damn thing. Bravo, ladies! Listen here

  • Lady Gaga is releasing a documentary on Netflix next month and I am very, very, very excited

  • Lil Uzi Vert album Luv Is Rage 2 Listen here

  • Buddy’s new EP Magnolia Listen here

  • A$AP Mob mixtape Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy Listen here

  • Last but certainly not least, DNCE have linked up with Rod Stewart to re-record Rod’s 1978 hit “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and tbh it could have been way, way funkier Listen here

Happy Friday! Coming at you live from Portland, Oregon! I’m here to provide you a brief break from the reality of (most of) America (just) waking up to a racism problem (understatement), and I come bearing a lot of music. So much, I got it coming out my ears and into yours (that sounds gross).

Before I share the SEVEN tracks I’ve scooped up for you this week, I’d first like to give a shout out to my friend Elise. She’s the header picture for this week’s edition of cmd+f, and she’s getting married this weekend (that’s why I’m in Portland!). I’ve spent this past week dusting off the cobwebs of some ancient iTunes playlists in my archives and compiling a list of songs I remember we listened to whilst living together in college (that was 7 years ago!!!). I remember when Gaga’s “Bad Romance” demo leaked and I played it on repeat for hours in our room, and the rich irony of me snapping at her for playing La Roux’s “Bulletproof” everyday. I got her a gigantic poster of Eric Northman for our dorm because we were obsessed with True Blood, we danced to Metronomy regularly, and bonded over our fascination with Patrick Wolf. The list is evergreen and I’ll dump new tracks in there from time to time, but it’s mostly a time capsule of tunes circa 2010. I get strong emotional attachments and associations with songs -  and I can say 100% of the songs dumped onto this playlist bring me such great memories of my friendship with Elise.

You can listen to my mix for Elise anytime here. Love you, girl!

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on Twitter with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too.

“Waking Up Slow” -  Gabrielle Aplin | This little slice of pop perfect has been on loop for the most of this past week. It’s got the lowkey sunpunched mellowbanger quality of a Carly Rae Jepsen track, aka it’s amazing AND will implant itself in your brain. Gabrielle’s had massive international success the past few years, particularly in Brazil, mostly pushing soft vocals over acoustic instrumentals… but Gabrielle Aplin the cinematic power pop princess? Into it. More, please. Listen here

“Water Me” - Lizzo | Lizzo is a damn goddess. “Water Me” is a celebration of her entire self, declaring she is her own source of inspiration, embraces the practice of self-acceptance and love, and she’s the source of her own personal growth. As a fat woman of color myself, Lizzo truly is the most refreshing and exciting acts out there killing the game. She is marching her way into the spotlight as a proud, big black woman, and she has written anthem after anthem about how much she loves being in her skin. The “Water Me” video takes it a step further, and celebrating the outward beauty of blackness. Beautiful, beautiful song. Listen here and Watch here

“Hot Mess” -  GIRLI | I know what you’re thinking - another GIRLI song?! So long as she cranks out these bops… I will not stop until she’s somewhat of a household name in the pop music community. “Hot Mess” is frantic, bold, fun, and high key relatable. Listen here

“Warning Signs” - Boilermakers feat. KLP | Boilermakers is Matt Okine, a jack of all trades of the entertainment industry from Australia. Beat is dope, but the hook carried out by KLP is luuuuush. “Warning Signs” is smooth as hell. Listen here

“Every Day’s the Weekend” -  Alex Lahey | Heyya! Would you look at that? Alex Lahey is another fellow Aussie cranking out fun, relentless rock tunes. “Every Day’s the Weekend” is a delirious, insatiable flask of indie pop. Listen here

“Favorite Girl” -  Henrik the Artist | Henrik the Artist stems from the self-proclaimed “first club music boi band” collective Rytmeklubben which they blend club and pop music. “Favorite girl” is cut from the same vein as the UK’s PC Music producers, but in this instance he mixes a slightly less demented and softer brush of late 90s/early 00s commercial pop vibes. “Favorite Girl” is a sticky, sweet delight. Listen here

“Black Cat Heavy Metal” -  Dan Luke and The Raid | Last but certainly not least is the debut single from Dan Luke and the Raid - a fast and heavy psych rock jam. With a weighty distortion on the vocals, the only words I can manage to slur my way through deciphering are “black cat” and “neon sign,” but I can’t help pretending how to sing the words all the way through. The hook on that chorus is so clutch. Listen here

BONUS

  • BRAND NEW RELEASED (their final????) AN ALBUM !!!!!! A select handful of fans who pre-ordered the album today, but you can buy and download Science Fiction here

  • A$AP Mob’s most consistent member A$AP Ferg dropped a surprise Still Striving mixtape and it’s doooooooope. “Plain Jane” is my shit. Tape includes features from everyone relevant in rap right now and Meek Mill Listen here

  • Justin Bieber has released yet another country song disguised as a pop bop. Producer BloodPop had his hands in this one so it’s fuego Listen here

  • New Weezer album is in the horizon. For now, listen to their new song “Mexican Fender” if you are in a mood to rawk out  Listen here

  • 1000% not fronting: Miley Cyrus’ new song “Younger Now” bangs Listen here

  • The sound of 2008 has evolved: Alice Glass, formerly of Crystal Castles, has released her debut EP and it was produced by Jupiter Keyes formerly of HEALTH, and I forgot how much I missed a wet, juicy bass line. Listen here

  • Dance yr nite away “tonite” with new LCD Soundsystem Listen here

What a WHIRLWIND few weeks it’s been. This time NEXT week, I will be enjoying a box full of Voodoo Donuts LIVE FROM PORTLAND, OR! One of my best college friends is (finally) getting married, and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

I’ve spent most of my week obsessively listening to Aphex Twin to help keep my brain focused on getting as many things done before I’m reunited with the Pacific Northwest. Between every loop of “Xtal” and “Avril 14th,” I managed to track down 5 new tracks from emerging artists that I’m fairly certain you’re going to enjoy.

“My Smile is Extinct” -  Kane Strang | New. Favorite. Song. This is not an exaggeration. I strongly considered only put this song down five times in a row, as I knew nothing else I listened to this week could grab my attention well enough to listen to anything else! “My Smile is Extinct” is, mathematically, a perfect song. Clocking in just under 3 min 30 seconds, every segment is as memorable as the last, and you’ll be signing all the lyrics after the first few spins. “Kill me now/ I want to die/ I heard there’s a chance at an afterlife,” the chorus kicks off. The vocals are all delivered in a keen level of monotone that verges on suppressing every level of emotion to not go postal. This song is the Pringles of all songs - once you pop, can’t stop. Put this puppy on repeat, and after about 30 minutes you’ll forget when the last spin of the song started. I actually discovered New Zealand’s Kane Strang on YouTube of all places after craving a music video binge, and the title “My Smile is Extinct” got a chuckle out of me. The rest is history. Listen here

“Motion Sickness” - Phoebe Bridgers | Been really deep inside my feelings this month. “Motion Sickness” is a stunning, evocative lyrical painting. Each line paints a vivid narrative of restlessness and anxiety. Haven’t stumbled across a song I can high key relate to in terms of trying to absorb and metabolize my anxieties, relationships, environment…  "I have emotional motion sickness / Somebody roll the windows down / There are no words in the English language / I could scream to drown you out." Also feel obligated to give a shout out to Phoebe for being a fellow Pasadena native! Really exciting to showcase someone this talented from my city. Listen here

“Mermaid” -  Skott | If you’ve been going HAM on whole wheat with Lana’s Lust For Life LP and want to switch things up a bit, may I introduce you to Skott? Imagine Lana went a bit more Kate Bush than Stevie Knicks, and you’ve got “Mermaid.” The Swedish siren has also dropped an artful clip to help completely set the mood on this ballad. Listen here and Watch here

“Adrenaline” - BOSCO | My gut reaction to this song was “holy shit.” The frantic, haunting production at first had me thinking this was a SZA b-side until I noticed it was an entirely different artist. “Give me a reason to love you through the pain” - like, YES GIRL! Tell! Them!!! Absolute banger. Listen here

“That Much” -  Buddy | While Kendrick Lamar has completely re-defined the Compton flow, Buddy has taken that vibe and wrapped it up in “That Much.” Back in May, I poked at Buddy’s lyrical content on his KAYTRANADA produced “World of Wonders” with a bit of an eyeroll, but warmed to it for that insatiable beat. Last month I got to experience Buddy live for the first time, and he surprised the hell out of me. I then later realized he’s been at this game for over 8 years and is only 23 years old. DAMN! August 4, 2017

This past week has been a long, luminous blur. I’ve had approximately 4 hours of sleep per night, met some incredible people, and somehow managed to dig up five sweet tracks from artists you may have never heard of or have flown under your radar.

“LMK” -  Kelela | Kelela is simultaneously not a secret, yet is THE secret weapon to experiencing sonic bliss. Her 2013 release CUT 4 ME made her an instant cult sensation, and her 2015 EP Hallucinogen was met with massive critical acclaim. Those in “the know” and on top of the coolest of cool music are no stranger to Kelela - her buttery smooth vocals have been featured on the Gorillaz’s latest album Humanz, and Solange’s A Seat at the Table. “LMK” is the first single off her highly anticipated debut album, and I could not be foaming at the mouth any harder than the moment this song dropped. Kelela's vocal delivery is sultry over the crisp, vivid backdrop produced by Jam City. You can sway to it, sing in the shower to it, initiate a hook up at the club to it…. Summer ‘17 has officially been blessed by “LMK.” Listen here

“You’re Mine” - Lola Marsh | While “You’re Mine” has a cool 8 million+ streams on Spotify, “You’re Mine” is a song that has to be approached from all angles. What drew me in on the first listen was the lush, sultry alto swooping over a delectable bass line. Lola Marsh’s Yael Shoshana Cohen turns the dreamy pop tune from sounding like a Velvet Underground deep cut in the studio recording into a charming coffee shop ballad. When I heard “You’re Mine” from a live recording with an acoustic guitar, stripped from that sinister, heavy bass, and it took on a more romantic facade. Listen to the studio version here, then get your coffee shop ballad on here

“Monday” -  Moon Regiment feat. Dominique | Firstable, TGIF - but may I introduce you to “Monday?” If Grimes worked with Sally Shapiro to produce an Italo Disco track, it’d 1000% sound like “Monday.” Moon Regiment is a Swedish producer I know next to nothing about, only than the fact that "Monday" is great and he’s been composing music for over a decade. Listen here

“Magazine” - Sløtface | Norway’s more-punk-than-pop Sløtface are stirring quite a buzz recently. I first heard them on BBC Radio 1 several moon cycles ago, but I’ve seen their name mentioned across a handful of publications in the past week. As a big believer in “signs,” the universe was obviously shining a blinding neon sign over Sløtface. I jumped back into their tunes, and their sound’s gotten so much heavier since the release of their single “Kill ‘Em With Kindness.” What hasn't changed is their chorus hooks are still undeniable. The group cite late-90s/early-00s teen romance film soundtracks as a huge influence on their sound, and what’s better than a Norwegian “Teenage Dirtbag,” baby?? Keep your finger on the pulse of this band - Sløtface are the new indie darlings and are going to burst through 2018 at breakneck speed. Listen here

“Deep Summer” (Burial Remix) -  Mønic | As the dog days of summer begin to soak into the skin on our backs from the moment our pinky toe steps out the door, we immediately settle in a “mood.” For me, if it’s over 90F and humid, I’m immediately stricken with grief. There is something so bittersweet about Summertime after you’ve gone through proper schooling and your dream Croatian beach vacation fund is really your emergency fund that somehow always goes toward your monthly credit card payment…. Wow, this got personal real quick. In “Deep Summer,” leave it to Burial to cast a humanized element over Mønic’s drowsy soundscape. The remix is bursting with life: tropical xylophones, the crisp “ktch” of a spliff catching fire, sharp inhales and wispy chuckles. It’s Burial at his best, transporting you straight onto a city block, and for ten minutes, your mouth will begin to water at the sound of the ice cream truck’s bell, sweat will cradle your shoulders as a campfire crackles in the sweltering heat. Get ready to dive head first into “Deep Summer.” Listen here

BONUS

  • Lorde’s new single is “Perfect Places” and I wanna vacation in every single location this video was shot - in the elaborate designer garb and all Watch here

  • This headline: LOL - laughs aside, producers literally realize a song into existence…. With that, if there is a song you are really, really digging right now, go find out the producer of that particular track, then see what other songs they’ve produced. It’s fun, and producers need love, too - especially in hip-hop.

  • Each new epic the War On Drugs song that comes out blows my friggin’ mind. “Pain” is divine Listen here

  • Meanwhile, Bebe Rexha out here releasing songs Camila Cabello’s label WISHES they could snatch from her. Her new single “That’s It” features a slick trap beat, Gucci Mane, and 2 Chainz. Smells like a hit, sounds like a hit, bangs like a hit; must be a hit. Go IN, Bebe!! Listen here

  • Innovative experimental producer of the decade Actress has dropped “Audio Track 5,” a new track from his forthcoming collaborative LP with the London Contemporary Orchestra. News broke yesterday that Actress and the LCO will be be debuting a performance via Boiler Room sometime this autumn. From the fragmented, distorted dystopian haze heard in “Audio Track 5,” rest assured this is going to be one sick livestream. Listen here

I’ve spent approximately 7 hours of my week chin-handsing it on my desk watching Charli XCX’s “Boys” music video. When I first heard about this entire concept of a seemingly endless list of male celebs and models doing soft, swoon-worthy things, nothing could have prepared me for it. It’s a 2 minutes and 47 second choose-your-own-internet-boyfriend ad, flipping the Male Gaze in on its head. It’s got Diplo doing bicep curls with puppies, Joe Jonas seductively licking at a milk mustache, Vance Joy savoring a donut, Chromeo having a pillow fight, Riz Ahmed cuddling a gigantic plush teddy bear…. And about thirty other pure, divine clips of “guys doing all the sexy things that girls usually do in videos.”

The video’s gone viral, you’ve most likely watched it 70+ times by now, but since then, people have been pitching their own personal “Boys” dream-casting. My top 5 personal favorites I’ve seen mentioned are:

1. Tom Holland testing lipstick swatches on his arm

2. Oscar Isaac watering ferns

3. Tom Hardy blowing bubbles

4. Chris Pratt doing long division in his head

5. Sufjan Stevens trimming a lawn with a pair of scissors

Who are and what would your top 3 ideal “Boys” dream-cast scenarios? Hit me up on Twitter!

“Mattress” - Leland | If you’ve never heard OF Leland, you’ve definitely heard Leland in some capacity – he’s a hit-making songwriter who’s responsible for Daya’s runaway hit “Hideaway,” half of the tracks on Troye Sivan’s debut album Blue Neighbourhood, a bulk of Allie X’s catalogue, and most recently the mastermind behind Selena Gomez’s newest single “Fetish.” What’s special about Leland’s lyrical content is how vivid the descriptions are – even if they can be a tad corny. Successful pop has a bit of nonsense tucked into it. In “Mattress,” Leland takes the mic this time to lament about letting a lover go and wanting nothing more in the freakin’ world than to have his body on their mattress. Listen here

“Sunny Days” -  Bel Heir | This song sounds like it belongs on an advert between breaks during an episode of The OC or even the background of a house party in a late 90s teen movie. Not sure if it’s the record scratches and bouncy guitars that give it a tinge of nostalgia for summer evenings on the beach, but I’ve been digging this tune all week. It’s been nagging at the back of my mind with a sense of familiarity and delight. Listen here

“Fire Dancing” -  Holy Oysters | Holy Oysters! Don’t think I can recall any Parisian psychedelic pop artists off the top of my head, and these dudes are killing the game. They sound like Kevin Parker produced a track for Arcade Fire - which we know would sound like swishing pop rocks and Coke in your mouth after snacking on some mushrooms. “Fire Dancing” is vibrant, electrifying, and so much fun to listen to. Listen here

“Celebration of the Disease” -  Cabbage | Cabbage are one of the most exciting new punk acts coming out of Manchester at the moment. Serving up classic, anarchist punk titles like “Uber Capitalist Death Trade” and “A Network Betrayal,” and lending their sound to stirring guitars and relentless chants. “Celebration of the Disease” sounds similar to early The Horrors tunes – a bit sinister, yet liberating. Listen here

“Midnight” - Jessie Ware | G I R L ! My mind is clear, my soul is cleansed, my world is aligned. For all the years I’ve been following Jessie’s career, I’ve immersed myself in the overall essence of her music from her debut album Devotion  – a touch cool, mostly soothing – but home girl came to COLLECT on this comeback single. As soon Jessie starts to belt out the chorus as it bursts through an Elton John-esque piano step, I. Am. Bald. Listen here

BONUS

  • RIP to the iPod Nano and Shuffle

  • Arcade Fire’s FIFTH studio album Everything Now is out and does not disappoint Listen here

  • Hallelujah! BØRNS is back! New single is titled “Faded Heart” Listen here

  • Cardi B has jumped on a remix of DRAM’s “Cute” and it’s delightful Listen here

  • From one cooky ass producer to another, PC Music founder AG Cook covered Aphex Twin’s IDM classic tune “Windowlicker” note-for-note and it’s a sugary, demented hyperfantasy Listen here

July 21, 2017

I was really looking forward to talking to y’all about how I'm not going to FYF Fest this weekend and Raf Simons’ new collection he showed this week, but there I feel there is nothing else I could open this week’s letter with other than the news that Chester Bennington of Linkin Park is dead. Reports state he died by suicide in his Los Angeles home this week.

A friend sent me a text asking if I had heard about Chester, and my first thought was he had been in an accident or diagnosed with a disease - but nothing could have prepared me for this. It’s all still fresh and doesn’t feel real.

So, I took a few breaths before I started to silently grieve at my desk. The loss of Prince and Bowie felt much different - they were legends of another space and time. Chester’s impact hit me so much harder as he was a huge presence in my life during my tween years.

Linkin Park’s debut album Hybrid Theory came out when I was just 10 years old. When my best friend in 6th grade introduced me to “In the End,” as corny as it sounds, I felt I had listened to music that ‘spoke’ to me for the first time ever. Being 11 years old in middle school with vicious bullies who verbally abused you wasn’t easy, but like most angsty teens who turn to music to find meaning for their existence, I found a way to cope by obsessively listening to Hybrid Theory and scribbling down a lot of poetry in my locked diaries from Claire’s.

As I matured through middle school, my love for Linkin Park never waned. My identity became synonymous with Linkin Park - I talked about them all the time, purchased all of their CDs and DVD sets, ordered my first book online through Barnes & Noble for their coffee table book. I tuned into every damn interview or Making the Video they had scheduled on MTV or FUSE. These dudes shaped my worldview at such an impressionable age: Linkin Park, particularly Chester and Mike Shinoda (who are inarguably the mouthpieces of the band), introduced me to loads of new music, and showed compassion through their extensive charity work.

Young, anxious teen me cared so much about Linkin Park because Linkin Park’s music became a reflection of myself. Their sound reflected my feelings, their lyrical content resonated with my own dark thoughts - Linkin Park truly were a revolutionary and game-changing sound for music at the turn of the millennium. I know it’s become a mockery in retrospect within the last few years - that entire “nu metal” genre of gritty rap rock with overproduced bionic beats. Laugh all you want: Linkin Park were a cornerstone for a major shift in the sound of mainstream rock.

I’m so grateful to have grown up with Linkin Park. I’m so grateful to have admired Chester for being open about his own depression and personal traumas.

Rest easy, man.

If you or someone close to you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and feel like there is nobody you can turn to, please reach out to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255. Lines are open 24/7.

“Virtue” - Kllo | What a breath of fresh air. “Virtue” is Kllo’s first single off their forthcoming debut album, and it’s a blissful, euphoric UK garage bop. Sounds very much like candy floss, and that feeling you get when you’re sipping a ginormous margarita whilst floating down a lazy river. Listen here

“That’s The Way It Is (Survival of the Sickest)” -  Rude GRL | BRAT POP CONTINUES TO THRIVE! Rude GRL are Ben Langmaid (formerly????) of La Roux and the very talented MC Jenna Dickens. They’re absolutely killing it on their DEBUT single with this Run-D.M.C. sample on a hyperloop smeared in Vaseline. That lo-fi charm sounds a bit like a long lost J.J. Fad demo tape unearthed from a dusty attic in Wales. It’s the first release off RAT BOY’s new label SCUM RECS. What a damn bar to set. Listen here

“Real Thing” (Jim-E Stack Remix) -  Lower Dens | Imagine: Ra Ra Riot singing a sad-ballad with a Prince twist. Lower Dens typically sound much more like a dreamy-pop The Walkmen, but this Jim-E Stack remix has “Real Thing” emerge as a strong contender for a Drive sequel soundtrack. Listen here

“Frontier” -  Queue | Love me some dreamy, 90s indie rock inspired tunes with a female lead vocalists. “Frontier” is a brash, frenetic whirlwind of a song. Best bit: when the subtle  tambourine jumps in the chorus. While rattled with layers upon layers of noise, it’s a tightly crafted instrumental with no second wasted between each wavering guitar string. It’s a good amount of busy, like a beaded Alexander McQueen gown. Quality tunage, y’all. Listen here

TTYN” - vivienxo | Sometimes I wish Carly Rae Jepsen could just spit it out and casually slip a grandiose “fuck you” into one of her seemingly endless catalogue of bops. Instead, Jepsus remains the Queen of Keeping Things PG, but I can’t complain since she never misses the mark on crafting a pop hit. Since Jespsus has yet to deliver it so blatantly, cue vivienxo dishing up one fantastic anti-fuckboi anthem we were WAITING to hear on the EMOTION B-sides album. Listen here

BONUS

  • DECLAN MCKENNA’S DEBUT ALBUM WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CAR? IS OUT AND YOU SHOULD REALLY PRIORITIZE LISTENING TO IT Listen here

  • Lana Del Rey’s Lust for Life album is out now. She has two songs with A$AP Rocky and one song with Stevie Nicks. Twitter is buzzing about this, so if you wanna but up on The Culture... Listen here

  • Louis Tomlinson (of One Direction, because I have a moral obligation to always report their wearabouts in solo careers [Speaking of; Harry Styles’ acting debut opens this weekend in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, and appaz Hazza does surprisingly well in his role, and you should see it on IMAX but definitely take a Xanax beforehand - this is all hearsay]) has a new solo single with Bebe Rexha called “Back To You.” Was really hyped because the promo aesthetic and the instrumentals are DOPE. Ultimate verdict: it’s a country folk ballad dressed in Ventements Listen here

  • Tyler, The Creator’s album Flower Boy dropped today. Standout track is “I Ain’t Got Time!” feat. A+ sampling of “Groove is in the Heart”  Listen here

  • GO ANALOGUE, BABY!!! Sabrina Carpenter continues to follow in Selena Gomez’s Disney-star-to-pop-star footsteps with her newest banger “Why” (which I’m high key in love with). She shared the music video for it on Wednesday starring her and Casey Cott (aka, Kevin Keller from the hit TV show ~Riverdalé~), and my favorite bit in the video is them eating Chinese in candlelight. Happy Friday, y’all! Overall, it’s been an uplifting week. I’ve been thinking about Spider-Man: Homecoming since I saw it last Saturday (please go see it ASAP if you haven’t yet), Raf Simons dropped a Blade Runner meets Joy Division/New Order inspired collection (which, if you know me, it's the most high key on brand fashion collection practically made for me of all time), and I finally booked my trip to Portland for my friend’s wedding next month! It’s been two years since I’ve been in the Pacific Northwest – looking forward to having Marionberry flavored everything the entire weekend, and hopefully I’ll get through a few rolls of film while I’m there.

“Summer Sound” - ROMES | This right here: the content we truly deserve. This is the second time ROMES have made an appearance on cmd+f – this week, I’ve been OBSESSED with their new single “Summer Sound.” Absolute BOP! When their self-directed music video for the tune dropped Monday, I had this song on repeat for hours at work. The day coasted by much more quickly as I started singing along with the chorus at my desk [cue me bopping along to “Say ‘Oooh, I’m good!’ The rhythm is here to stay!!!!!!” like, YES IT DAMN WELL IS]. Ultimate result: my spirits were lifted, crops were watered, skin cleared, etc. Listen here / Watch here

“We Dance” -  Crush Club | As a staunch disco never died advocate, Crush Club are giving me LIFE. “We Dance” is a classic disco tune, loaded with an easy to groove 4/4 fiesta, bursting with smooth piano stabs and liberating vocals. I almost guarantee you’ll want to rip your clothes off and bathe in glitter on a dancefloor by the second chorus. Listen here

“I Wish I Was A Bird” -  Luke Rathborne | This tune came my way through a press email, and I was delightfully surprised. “Don’t Call Me Baby” is one of two new releases from Luke this week after the new announcement of his signing to Ribbon Music. Full well knowing Ribbon Music’s roster of artists (most notably John Maus, whom I’m still low key obsessed with), I instantly knew Luke’d be a special addition. From the first note of “Don’t Call Me Baby,” I was warmed by the jovial nature of the tune, but the real star is the 8 and a half minute monster ballad “I WIsh I Was A Bird.” Don’t let anyone fool you that long songs are a waste of your time – I’m here to tell you that this one is very special. Listen here

“anemona” -  slenderbodies | If Glass Animals whispered over a Foals instrumental with Alt-J levels of harmonizing, then you’d get something sounding very close to “anemona.” The guitar picking and sonic flourishes are insane, to the point I’m convinced the song is actually 3-dimensional. It builds on so many layers compressed down onto the same notes at about five separate angles. What I’m describing make me sound insane, but once you give it a spin, you’ll hear exactly what I mean. Listen here

“Rush” - Lauren Faith | My first thought when I heard “Rush” was that JLo’s team would have snatched this song up in a heartbeat if it was written during her prime reign in the era of velour track suits. Trop-house lite production at the start of “Rush” aside, once the drums kick in 30 seconds in, the grooving only goes up from there. While I haven’t found much info about Lauren Faith, and only seeing this is her second official single, I can get behind this sound. Listen here

BONUS

  • cmd+f alumna San Mei has released her debut EP, and it’s top notch hazy rock goodness Listen here

  • The new Arcade Fire track “Electric Blue” is a hypnotic masterpiece Listen here

  • Mura Masa’s debut album is FINALLY HERE!!! Listen here

  • Rising pop darling Billie Eilish dropped “COPYCAT” - vibes are reminiscent of early, early Lana Del Rey Listen here

  • Speaking of Lana Del Rey: Listen here

  • More evidence 2017 has been a fever dream: Coldplay have a new EP and Big Sean is one on of their tracks. Listen here

  • With Soundcloud being on its DEATHBED, there’s an even more horrific story looming in the background: one of my favorite sites I visited religiously throughout high school, Hype Machine, is facing a rough patch in this stream-heavy culture. If you’re unfamiliar with HypeM, it’s a website that helped track and prioritize the most “hyped” about tracks during the height of the independent music blogging era circa 2007-2012. I would spend hours scrolling through HypeM discovering new artists, glistening disco-fied remixes, and tricked out bootlegs from all over the net. It was my number one new music source for a solid 5 years, all through Uni, up until, erm, Spotify came around. HypeM runs on humanized data, not computerized algorithms, and it’s one of the last honest places in music to offer such a service. They keep the opinions of little guys (like me!!) at the forefront. Unfortunately, the three-person independent team is asking for our help to keep them afloat. Think of HypeM as your local indie bookstore - they’re helping curate honest opinions of music consumption without influence of a PR team. HypeM is formative to my personal music tastes, and helped blossom me into the tastemaker I am today. If HypeM has touched you and your love for music over the years, please consider pledging your support to help keep the future of HypeM up and running. Support here

I don’t mean to be that boring person who talks of the weather, but when it’s so hot you can hardly breathe, it’s difficult to think about anything else. The fact I sweat out a liter of water trekking across the parking lot by the time I step foot inside my work office or into Target is NOT OKAY. “Film Club” - Childcare | What a breath of fresh air “Film Club” is - churning guitars, giddy lyrics, insatiable hooks. The guitar licks peppered throughout the chorus are the star of this jam - or are they audio recordings of someone screaming “AaaAAAaAAAH!” ?? Whatever that sound is, it’s the GOAT. Go forth and marinate in this tune. Sonics aside, lyrics are high key relatable: “Film Club” is about attending a film club mostly to see/meet with someone they admire (or are secretly obsessed with????) more than the films. I recall considering taking up some unusual hobbies once upon a time around high school and my early college years in hopes to get close to someone. Is it safe to say we’ve all been there, or did I just read way too much YA lit in my formative teen years? Listen here

“overbehind” -  Flor | LA-based Flor have racked up several million streams across the net from their latest album come out. you’re hiding. A perfect blend of those last-era pop punk instrumentals flourished with a bit of BØRNS-esque infectious hooks and vocals, “overbehind” was a song I was trying my darndest to resist loving it the first time I heard it. After spinning it endlessly and never skipping it once this week whenever it came on, I knew it was a keeper for this week’s letter. Listen here

“We Stayed Up All Night” -  Tourist feat. Ardyn | I am LIVID this slipped past my radar the day it dropped! How on earth did this get lost in the sauce??? (It was released on a Wednesday….) We’re so lucky I didn’t go another week without hearing this song, or you’d hear me screaming from over 10,000 miles away. Tourist hangs up the synth-heavy house productions for a surprising, dreamy little pop number with Ardyn. If The OC was still on air, this song would fit PERFECTLY onto their iconic soundtrack mixes. Listen here

“Someone” -  Anna of the North | Anna of the North is no stranger to cmd+f - I featured the Norwegian/Kiwi duo’s single “Oslo” in the very first letter. “Someone” is a shimmery synth-pop JAM. I am so, so in love. Listen here

“Durbaan Ka Ii Tuma” - Waayaha Cusub feat. Desiigner | Guess what Spotify did this week? In a bold as fuck political move TWO DAYS after Independence Day, Spotify launched their “I’m with the Banned” music movement. The initiative links six American artists with six artists from the Muslim-majority countries listed in 45*’s (attempted and continually ruled unconstitutional) travel ban. Oh, yes. Spotify pulled a Degrassi: they SO went there. Of all six tunes, I picked this BOP by Somalia’s Waayaha Cusub featuring Desiigner. Listen here

BONUS

  • Zedd and Liam Payne have a song out - “Get Low.” At first I wasn’t sure about it, and then I spent approximately 5 hours of my day yesterday listening to it on repeat (this is not a hyperbole). As a proud militant Liam stan, I have to be completely honest: I still feel like the song needs some more flourishes (i.e. Liam belting out some crazy ass runs in the final two bridges), but I really cannot complain when I’ve been gifted 3:22 continuous minutes of nothing but Liam Payne singing over an entire instrumental. Very pleased with this sound/direction. More this and less Sheeran, Payno. Listen here

  • Whole new HAIM album is out Listen here

  • Brian freakin Eno produced the new Coldplay track “A L I E N S” Listen here

  • I completely missed Liam Gallagher sharing another new solo single?????? It is of course incredibly listenable and enjoyable and what a time to be ALIVE for the return of Liam f*cking Gallagher, amirite? Listen here

  • The two new Rhye songs are A+ Watch here

  • For your entertainment, I started a playlist composed of Halsey imposters to document the growing trend of Halsey-esque vocalists cropping up in pop music as of late Listen here

June 30, 2017

It’s Independence Day next Tuesday here in America, and global affairs and chaos aside, I’m very much looking forward to enjoying a four day weekend. Part of me thinks a beach may or may not be involved, but for sure fireworks, my camera(s), and a whole lot of crazy food from local vendors and barbecues will be gobbled up across these days. Bring on all the Korean dumplings, short ribs, and mangonadas, y’all.

This week I’ve hand-picked six tracks to help you shimmy your way into the long weekend.

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on the cmd+f Twitter at @cmdf_me with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week.

“Try to Fight” - Cathedrals | Oh. My. God. Remember Alphabeat???? Cathedrals are filling the void Alphabeat has left in my heart. “Try to Fight” straight up sounds like Keisza singing over a Years & Years instrumental. With a relentless bass looming beneath a bubbly synth and infectious hook, “Try to Fight” is “King” at half-speed, but still gets full marks on the campy electro beats. High key suprised this hasn’t made it onto the H&M In Store Music playlist, to be quite honest. Listen here

“Body Bounce” -  Lao Ra feat. Konshens | This is the second time I’ve thrown Lao Ra down in the cmd+f letter (here is the first), and she’s thrown down yet another fine “pineapple pop” dancefloor banger. “Body Bounce” features Jamaican artist Konshens, fusing a delicious blend of Lao Ra’s Colombian roots with tropical and dancehall beats. Get ready to pop-pop-pop-pop. Listen here

“Flash” -  The Belligerents | Damn: The Belligerents’ new single “Flash” is better than good. Underneath all that psychedelic flare, this song is undoubtedly bigger than it was likely intending to be. This song deserves to be performed in a damn stadium. I want to hear this at full volume, amps screeching. “Flash” is the first single off The Belligerents’ upcoming debut album (!!!), and I honestly can’t WAIT to hear what they pull off.  Listen here

“Lonely Now” -  Lover | Who on earth is Lover? I’m surprised there hasn’t been an artist already named Lover by this point, but here we are. UPDATE: he actually goes by LØVER, but he’s on Spotify as just Lover. Anyway, LØVER is an R&B-lite artist from Norway. “Lonely Now” sounds like a long lost Michael Bolton track in a 1980s teen movie, meaning it’s essentially perfect. Listen here

“Trampoline” (Saint Etienne Remix) -  Kero Kero Bonito | Sickly sweet J-pop (in English) reworked over a ska beat - sounds like it’d be a mess, but I assure you it’s BRILLIANT. Kero Kero Bonito have been around for a minute, churning out ironic, blissfully bonkers pop music on speed. Saint Etienne have kicked “Trampoline” down a few notches and rubbed the tune down into a beachy-keen day dream. Listen here

“Call Me Out” -  Sea Girls | I leave you with one last big tune: Sea Girls have come out the gate at breakneck speed with “Call Me Out” - it’s an unrelenting, contagious tune. What a freaking debut single, my friends. I’ve sent this off to two people this week, and both of their reactions were variations of “into it.” If you’re a fan of British indie pop (a la The Kooks, et al), BUMP THIS. Listen here

BONUS

  • JAY-Z dropped his 13th studio album 4:44 on TIDAL. Literally everyone who has a TIDAL subscription confirms it’s incredible (likely to justify the fact the have a TIDAL subscription). And if you’re curious and don’t have a Sprint phone plan, seems like you’re “never” going to hear this album as it’s not only a TIDAL exclusive, but it’s now a TIDAL with Sprint exclusive. It’s like this man thinks he’s Beyoncé or something...

  • Astrid S is ready to take on the globe!! The Norwegian pop princess has dropped her new Party’s Over EP  Listen here

  • The only album you’re gonna need with you by the pool this weekend: Calvin Harris - Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 Listen here

  • EVERYTHING I DREAMT UP ONCE UPON CAME INTO REALITY IN A MUSIC VIDEO!!! The xx’s new video for “I Dare You” was styled AND DIRECTED by Raf Simons and Alasdair McLellan, filmed in Los Angeles at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Sowden House and John Lautner’s Rainbow House, starring Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things, and Ashton Sanders in a crisp ass turtleneck. WHEW! Watch here

  • Mura Masa has dropped two new tunes: one with Christine and the Queens, the other with the legendary Damon Albarn. Listen here

The summer solstice has already eclipsed here in the northern hemisphere. I officially have to check if the tires of my care haven’t melted into the asphalt before I start my car, have taken to liberally applying sun cream on my face every 2 hours, and still haven’t increased my water intake. If this heat continues to press on like this, you’ll be receiving music recommendations from a golden raisin starting next week.

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or on the cmd+f Twitter at @cmdf_me with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too.

________________________________________

“Times We Had” - SG Lewis feat. Toulouse | Let me start off by apologizing for holding out on you. I was initially going to drop this tune in last week’s letter, but it was very late and I wanted to have enough clarity and peace of mind to completely GUSH about “Times We Had.” UK producer SG Lewis has once again blown my mind. The mysterious Toulouse (who’s dropped a handful of tunes over the past year) offers up some soulful vocals over the kicks and snares. I swear me talking about it do it justice, so I’ll stop talking and let you go have a listen. Listen here

“As If It’s Your Last” -  BLACKPINK | If you’re a K-pop music fan, without a doubt you’ve already seen/heard this BOP. At the time I’m writing up this newsletter, the video has been up for 20 hours and has already amassed over 11 MILLION views on Youtube. Gah damn!! I saw a lot of friends screaming about this on Twitter when I came home from work last night, and so I turned it on and got my damn life. This is the gummiest, bubbliest, sweetest chorus. The melody will burrow its way into to your ear, and you’ll be sashaying your way through the day. Listen/watch here

“Desolately Devoted” -  Denai Moore | From the first note I heard come out of Denai Moore, I was moved. My entire core was soothed, I just clocked with her music instantly. Her new album We Used to Bloom is a seamless, glorious 37 minute journey. The first time I ran through it, I felt like i was covered in aloe after a day in the sun. I was sold on “Desolately Devoted” as soon as the choir came in toward the end. Listen here

“Will You Dive” -  Hot Dreams | This tune is a ghost of an early 90s Madchester daydream. Stuffed with delicious reverb, the tune starts out begging for a bit of shoegazing, all until it goes all balls out in the last minute and a half. It balls itself up before all crashing down on a loud, vicious jam session. Rock out, my friends. Listen here

“Reborn” -  Rae Morris | For those who do check out/listen to my monthly playlists, you’ll likely have heard this little joint already. It’s been placed in my June 17 playlist for the past two weeks. What made me put it in the letter this week happened this week after listening to Switched on Pop, a music podcast that breaks down and dissects pop music theory. Their latest episode broke down a few contemporary examples of songs riding on the “rule of 3s” in which the song can be split between three different distinctive layers in order to gain our maximum level of attention. While a seemingly simple formula, the listener can focus more on the content of the song. Using less also leaves open for more, while I be extra flourishes here or there. Well, what would you know: “Reborn” fits right on in with that rule of 3s.  Listen here

BONUS

  • If you’d like to listen to the full episode by the Switched on Pop podcast I mentioned above, the link is here. I can’t recommend their podcast enough; Nate and Charlie break down pop music in a way that’s interesting, and exciting. They’ve actually helped explain the appeal of so many hits on the charts I could not wrap my head around!

  • VINCE STAPLES’ BIG FISH THEORY IS THE MOST WELL PRODUCED AOTY. THE HD BASS?? I SWEAR YOU HAVE LITERALLY NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE THIS. KEY TUNE: “Yeah Right” Listen here

  • Rita Ora’s video for “Your Song” is out, and I want names for this corporate affair she’s “working” at that allowed her to stroll in wearing a fishnet Comme des Garcons piratesque two piece suit and ballet flats because I wanna drop them my CV Watch here

  • The xx have dropped a deluxe edition of their new album I See You. The star bonus track is “Seasons Run” - very much the seasonal affective disorder cousin of Lana’s “Summertime Sadness.” Go give that baby a few spins Listen here

  • Go give ASAHD a pat on the back for all his hard work: DJ Khaled’s Grateful LP is out today (fav tune is “I Love You So Much” with Chance the Rapper) Listen here

Feeling very strongly about the tunes I’ve picked out this week! I’ve dabbled across several genres this week, really digging for some sonic surprises. Enjoy!

“Not Enough” - Lido feat. THEY. | Hold onto your ass: “Not Enough” is gonna be the best song you’ve heard all year so far. Not to set the bar so high, but you’ve got to trust me on this. Frankly, I’m shocked Lido had it in him to crack out this tight, funky new jack swing beat. Oh, and he got THEY. singing on the track giving me whiplash: I thought I was listening to some Bell Biv DeVoe bootleg deep cut. Bet you can’t listen to this without the urge to get up and cabbage patch your way through the rest of the day. Listen here

“Aura” -  Bicep | This one is very special this week, y’all. To start, Bicep are legends in the dance music community. The Belfast duo started up their website Feel My Bicep where they’d dust off and upload long lost dance tracks. I’m talking serious ass Italo Disco deep cuts, Detroit techno mastery, beats spanning from the birth of Chicago house. Eventually they formed the DJ duo now known as Bicep where they put together these sick ass mixes AND produce their own tunes. After years of dropping one of singles and EPs, yesterday they announced they’ll be dropping their debut self-titled album (congrats!) in September. Needless to say, I’m really stoked. Listen to their spanking new cut “Aura” for a taste of new Bicep. Listen here

“Fizzy” -  Rosa Nutty | Kicking it down a few notches with Irish singer songwriter Rosa Nutty and her tender ode to being depressed in Dublin. Well, the themes can apply in any city, but I’ve been to Dublin and it can get a bit bleak. Everyone knows everyone; how do you even try to get out of your block and people out of your business? “Pick yourself off the floor, you don’t hurt,” she assures over a melancholic, echoing loop of her vocals. A high key #mood “Fizzy” is. Listen here

“Because” -  Smerz | MOCA recently announced a summer music series and I noticed Smerz was on the bill under Zola Jesus. Plucking “Because” back on here, as the tune fucking bangs. Phil Taggart rinsed this one pretty hard last year every chance he could. The constant, choppy hi-hat looming under wonky, wet synths are lush, I just wanna bite into this song. Reminds me of a bit of Sally Shapiro meets FKA Twigs meets Little Dragon. Listen here

“Humongous” -  Declan McKenna | You remember the first time you heard Arctic Monkeys? I got gooseflesh up my arms and on the back of my neck within the first seconds of “I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor” while sitting on the couch listening to satellite radio on a Saturday afternoon back in high school. It’s moments like that you know an artist has something really special going on, and that’s how I feel about each song Declan McKenna has dropped. If you followed my song recs in the pre-cmd+f days, you may recall Chris giving a shout out to young Declan. For those who’re new here and haven’t heard a single note of a Declan McKenna song, you’re in for a real treat. Hailed as THE new face of indie pop in the UK, and only having turned 18 last December, “Humongous” is a HUGE track. He really has no business making tunes this incredible so early in his career. Watch the video here. Listen here

BONUS

  • Yes, Lorde! Melodrama has arrived. Listen here

  • If you’re in the mood for sexy, churning guitars, new Royal Blood album is waiting for you to give it a spin. Listen here

  • King of getting outside and turning off your phone and soaking up the sun: George Ezra is back with an ode to tuning everything out, and I can say it’s made this week much brighter Listen here

  • New The Killers is pretty incredible, isn’t it? Brandon Flowers is morphing into David Byrne and I am HFT. Listen here

June 9, 2017

What an emotionally charged week. Can ya feel it in the air? In ya bones?

I’ve spent about 18 hours of my week at my day job listening solely to podcasts about government conspiracy theories and serial killers to take the edge off the Comey public hearing and UK snap election results that happened yesterday, and oddly enough it helped! Feeling pretty good about my Friday now, though I could go for a pitcher of sangria.

Please reach out to me via the handy dandy contact page on the cmd+f website, or at the brand new cmd+f Twitter at @cmdf_me with your thoughts about any of the tracks I’ve selected this week. I love chatting about music. Let me in on your new favorite band; they’re looking for new fans, too.

“Not About You” - Haiku Hands | Y E S. YES. YEEEEES. Fuck me up!! Melbourne’s Haiku Hands have come out of left field with this bratty banger I’ve been blasting in my car all damn week. This is their first single, and I’m hooked. The production takes me back to those halcyon days when I’d pirate episodes of Skins in high school and rinse Klaxons and Hadouken! records for hours on end afterward (I thought I was really, really cool). “Not About You” has purely addictive, cheeky lyrics and brazen bursts of energy. I can’t wait for more from Haiku Hands. Listen here

“Until You Feel Good” -  San Mei | I bring yet another tune from Down Under, this time from Gold Coast’s San Mei. This hazy, post-beach come down with lush vocals and fuzzed-out guitars is intoxicating. The melodies cradle you with a sense of comfort whilst San Mei croons about being sure to take care and go easy on ourselves. Listen here

“Glory” -  Dermot Kennedy | Dermot is on his way to be THE next male singer songwriter, mark my damn words, y’all!! Most of you may already be thinking, “not another one,” or “don’t we have enough of those?” Can’t argue with you there, but Dermot, like those who’ve garnered a steady fan base over the years, has that something special factor, all bundled up in his vocals and songwriting. I initially had his new single “Boston” up for this week, but I fell back on his track “Glory” to really grab you by the balls. Strap in: the conviction and strength in his vocals will knock out of your seat. Oh, and did I mention he’s Irish? If you live in LA, be sure to RSVP for School Night and see Dermot for FREE at the Bardot in Hollywood (and let me know if you’re going)! Listen here

“It’s All Good” -  Superorganism | This is the shit I live for right here! Part Architecture in Helsinki, part early Gorillaz met with cut n’ paste production a la The Avalanches, “It’s All Good” is a demented piece of audible mastery. Appaz Superorganism is a trans-continental supergroup of 7 musicians from London scratching up beats for a 17-year-old vocalist name Orano who lives in Maine. Or at least that’s what they’ve said… their first song got taken down for an unauthorized sample clearance (despite Frank Ocean playing it on his Beats1 blondeRADIO show). When “It’s All Good” was polished and ready for released, they somehow nabbed a premiere on Beats1. Kooky origin story aside, “It’s All Good” bangs. Listen here

“Lose My Cool” -  Amber Mark | I’m excited as hell for Amber Mark - girl has got some serious pipes and a true gift for songwriting on all levels. Her production is smooth and heavily influenced by her nomadic life of growing up around the globe. You can hear traces of Samba and classic R&B. In one of her interviews, Mark says her sister best described her sound as ‘tribal soul.’ It’s a breath of fresh air, and each track on her 3:33am EP has a life of its own. Listen here

BONUS

  • Again - Dermot Kennedy is performing Monday June 12 at the Bardot Hollywood for FREE for the weekly It’s a School Night showcase. Former cmd+f pick Ten Fe will also be making an appearance that night! Hit me up if you’re going and say hi! Click here to RSVP

  • Exit Kid (Emre of Years & Years and their touring drummer Dylan’s music project) have their debut EP out today! D O P E Listen here

  • Ten Tonnes has dropped his Born to Lose EP today Listen here

  • Best new Lorde release has arrived - “Sober” Listen here

  • About damn time: SZA coming through with a new album! Listen here

  • Only gonna mention Katy Perry has a new album out (listen to Allie X’s CollXtion II album instead Listen here)

  • Need to feel like you’re living inside a romanticized summer on the InterRail across Europe, riding rented bikes around cities all day, getting drunk on 2€ bottles of wine every night and reckless heavy petting on park benches and cobblestone streets? #bigmood - Phoenix have an album for that. Listen here

June 2, 2017

Welcome to the midway mark of 2017!… Can you believe we’re starting the second half of the year already? Summer festival season is in full swing. A boatload of major albums are about to drop over the next few months or be announced for quarter 4 (praying Years & Years has some answers for us soon). On  the other hand, summertime approaching here in the Northern Hemisphere means I’m crippled with embarrassment to go out in public in sandals because I need a post Spring pedicure.

While the earth is going up in flames, do know I’ve got a nice selection of five songs this week for you to enjoy, and an armada of bonus content this week. Take your mind off some things, kick your feet up - enjoy!

“Jinx” - IDA KUDO | I have to admit: when this song first came on, I almost switched it. I was trying to focus on a project at work, and luckily for the song, I couldn’t touch my phone in that moment and had to ride the song out. Good rule of thumb is to give a song at least 30 seconds– and if you’re patient, give it the whole damn song.It was worth sitting through because this chorus BANGS. For fans of Grimes and Little Dragon, “Jinx” is by far my most exciting song I’ve dug up this week. Not much literature floating around about IDA KUDO, but what I have found out she’s a Denmark-based Danish/Japanese artist making incredible experimental electropop pretty consistently over the last few years. Listen here

“Techno Parties” -  Lustgas | The Swedes strike AGAIN! Even LESS information out there about this artist. This is the only song I’ve found by Lustgas (though to be honest I haven’t tried too hard). “Techno Parties” sounds a bit like a cross between Peter Bjorn and John at their campiest meets The Von Bondies (aaah, remember them?) forged together during the rise of peak early 80s Blondie. Sounds like a lot happening? Well, it’s ultimately a bangin pop tune. Listen here

“Further” -  TOPS | Every music journalism outlet is losing their minds over the new TOPS tunes. I’ve fallen for it, too. Pitchfork describes their sound as “honey-dipped guitars and twinkling keyboards,” and “paint a picture as stark as heartbreak” with this track “Further.” When you hear the track, these descriptions will make a whole lotta sense. Listen here

“Fire Sign” -  Sensible J feat. REMI and Sampa the Great | Australia got bars. Like, serious ass – Iggy Azelea has managed to make herself the face of Australian hip-hop, meanwhile they’re down there hiding REMI, Sensible J, and Sampa the Great!!! “Fire Sign” is fucking dope. Honest, groovy, funky, free. This got that pure 90s New York vibe. Listen here

“Theresa May (Bullshit)” - Cherryade | My babes Cherryade have bust out an anti-Conservative club ANTHEM. Never in my life did I think I’d want to shake my ass to “hide your shit like Theresa May.” The production on this is crazy as hell, and would go the hell AWF in a club. Speaking of Theresa May: the UK election is next week. I’m here to remind y’all if you are reading this and live in the UK, please remember to cast a vote for your local PM!! Listen here

BONUS

  • Those who are close to me know one of my faaaavorite genre’s of music to listen to is house music. NPR’s podcast Code Switch, which explores race and identity in American (and sometimes global) culture, have released an incredible episode on house and techno music. The episode highlight its origins in black/Latinx/queer communities in Chicago and Detroit in the early 80s, and explore dance music has devolved into yet another music culture imperialised and dominated by white male musicians in Europe. For music nerds like yours truly, those who aren’t familiar with the origins of dance music, or if you’ve got 20 minutes to spare, it’s imperative you give this a listen (and share with your friends). Listen here

  • LOTS OF NEW MUSIC THIS FRIDAY- BEAR WITH ME, BUT WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS

  • Feeling stressed about the state of the world? Arcade Fire will make it sound slightly more optimistic for at least 5:03 consecutive minutes. Listen here

  • Dua Lipa’s debut album is finally here! Don’t get too worked up though as half of the tracks have been released as singles……………………………………………. Nevertheless, I assure you’re still gonna bop till you drop. Listen here

  • NEW! BETSY! SECOND COMING OF CHER IS TOO REAL!! Listen here

  • Haven’t listened yet, but Halsey’s hopeless fountain kingdom dropped today. I can assure you it’s more a pop album than an alternative album. “Strangers” is the best song on it. Yep, I have determined “Strangers” is peak Halsey. Can't tell me otherwise Listen here

  • Liam Gallagher has gone solo. Like, purely solo - no Beady Eye bullshit. Still not as good as anything Noel’s written for him to sing, but it’s still a fucking belter. 9/10. Listen here

  • Oh, and have you had the chance to follow the official cmd+f Twitter and Instagram?

  • Once more, with feeling: IF YOU LIVE IN THE UK, PLEASE VOTE NEXT THURSDAY, 8 JUNE!!! REMIND YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY!
